Private sale: two months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. One transfer only.
Queensland Transport is specific. For a private seller, a safety certificate is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres from the date of issue — whichever expires first. Licensed motor dealers get three months or 1,000 km. One certificate covers one registration transfer. If you do not sell in time, you need a new inspection.
Time it for the listing, not the day you think about selling
Get the certificate when the car is ready to list, not six weeks earlier “just in case”. A well-priced Gold Coast car usually sells inside the two-month window. If you are commuting 400 km a week, the kilometre cap can bite first — we record the odometer on the certificate.
You can advertise without one
You do not have to hold a current safety certificate to put the car on Facebook Marketplace or carsales. You do need one before the buyer can transfer the registration. Serious buyers move faster when the certificate is already done — which is why most private sellers book it just before, or just after, the first serious enquiry.
Selling to a dealer
If you are trading the car into a licensed motor dealer you generally do not need a safety certificate. If you are selling privately, you do. We issue them in Molendinar for $89, Monday to Friday from 6am.
